Whatever you do, if you have a computer, buy yourself a digital camera. I was accustomed to using a 35 mm camera and bought a digital Olympus camera last year and let me tell you, it was the best thing I ever did. As an artist I have to take hundreds of pictures every year just for documenting my art. But I figured the cost of all of this photography would allow me to buy a digital camera if I was willing to use only digital images for my work. I bought an Olympus C-3040 (the latest is this C-5060 to the left) which looks like just a regular touristy kind of camera but has many fantastic and very high quality features including the capacity to record several minutes of video with sound! Besides that you never have to spend money developing another roll of film and every roll you don't develop goes toward paying you back for the smart investment you made.

Another bonus I didn't consider at first is the fact that you can shoot and shoot and shoot pictures, delete them at will, and store hundreds and thousands of photos on a CD if you have a CD recorder on your computer. The one shown here you can buy for a $100.00 that's cheap! Let's face it, how often do you really look at a photo? Not too often and of the photos you have, many are often duds or messed up in some way. With a digital camera you can review all of your images and never print any or, when you like print one out now and then when you want to frame one or when you want to send one to a family member but most of all you can shoot them off to friends and family via email or put them on your website, you can even photograph documents instead of using a scanner. 

For a whole lot of very good reasons both economical and practical, a digital camera is a very good move.

One thing I found out through research was that you want to stick with the major camera companies when you buy a camera because of the lens system. A proven camera company like Olympus or Nikon are going to have very high standards for their lenses.
